 Carson Park Courts Eau Claire, WI The Eau Claire Earlybird horseshoe tournament is a NHPA sanctioned tournament conducted by the Eau Claire Horseshoe Club. The event is a warm-up to the upcoming pitching season and provides pitchers from around the midwest an opportunity to participate in a sanctioned tournament event and apply the average for entry into the 2008 World Horseshoe Tournament at York, PA. The schedule is tentative based on the number of entries. All games will be 40 shoes with 8 pitchers per class. Bad weather conditions might alter the pitching format to 30 shoe games. Plans call for the first round to start at 9:00 a.m. with the second round beginning at 12:00. Classes may or may not be mixed, again depending on the number of entries. You will receive a copy of the pitching schedule. Entry fee for the Eau Claire Earlybird is $5.00. Pitchers will keep their own scores while using the self scoring scoreboards at the courts. There will be sanctioned tournament patches but no other trophies or cash awards. Food and Refreshments will be available at the courts. Entry deadline is Saturday, April 26, 2008. The Chippewa Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau has provided the Eau Claire Horseshoe Club with a listing of hotels/motels that are providing pitchers special group rates for their stay. EAU CLAIRE'S EARLYBIRD TOURNAMENT RESULTS - May 10, 2008
After a cool start the day warmed to provide decent weather for the tournament. Forty-six pitchers competed in five eight-person & one six-person classes.
Doesn't that woman ever lose??? Gert Wilcziek claimed first place in Class A, winning all seven games with a 77.9% average. Four pitchers finished with 4-3 records. Vince Jakel, 54.6% edged out Bert Logsdon (MN) 52.9% for second place.
Harold Bischel, 39.6%, narrowly missed a sweep in Class B with a 6-1/2/1/2 record followed closely by James Sheehan's 47.9%, 6-1. Gloria Smith claimed third at 4-3, 36.4%.
Lonny Trangsrud, a new Eau Claire Club member, took first in Class C at 6-1, 31.4%. Les Karpiel who had high ringer average in the class at 42.5% came in second at 5-2, while Dean Chaffee, another new Eau Claire Club member took third at 4-1/2/2-1/2, 29.6%.
In Class D, Jerry Schroeder easily took first at 7-0, 37.5%. Robin Constance came in second at 5-2, 28.9%, while our own Elly McCarn edged out David Paul for third by ringer percent at 4-3, 26.1%.
Ryan Anderson, grandson of the veteran left-hander Bob Anderson, returned to the courts after several years off with a bang, sweeping Class E at 7-0, 31.4%. Ron Wiese, (Pres. Paul's dad) won second place by ringer percent (23.2) over Ted Rohde's 18.2%. Both had 4-3 records.
In the six-person Class F, Phil Roeser took first place at 4-1, 12%. John Ranzenberger also at 4-1, 9.6%, took second place. The two agreed not to play off for first. Jay Ganther came in third, 3-2, 10.4%.
It was nice to see a good sized group of our friends from Minnesota participating in the tournament.
