The Eau Claire Earlybird horseshoe tournament is a NHPA sanctioned tournament conducted by the Eau Claire Horseshoe Club. The event is a warm-up to the upcoming pitching season and provides pitchers from around the midwest an opportunity to participate in a sanctioned tournament event and apply the average for entry into the 2011 World Horseshoe Tournament at Monroe, LA.
The schedule is tentative based on the number of entries. All games will be 40 shoes with 8 pitchers per class. Bad weather conditions might alter the pitching format to 30 shoe games. Plans call for the first round to start at 9:00 a.m. with the second round beginning at 12:00. Classes may or may not be mixed, again depending on the number of entries. You will receive a copy of the pitching schedule.
Entry fee for the Eau Claire Earlybird is $5.00. Pitchers will keep their own scores while using the self scoring scoreboards at the courts. There will be sanctioned tournament patches but no other trophies or cash awards. Food and Refreshments will be available at the courts.
Entry deadline is Saturday, April 23, 2011.
The Chippewa Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau has provided the Eau Claire Horseshoe Club with a listing of hotels/motels that are providing pitchers special group rates for their stay. Click the following link for a listing of the hotels/motels, their price and the phone number to call to make any arrangements.

EARLYBIRD TOURNAMENT May 7, 2011

A smaller than usual attendance was accompanied by warmer than normal temperatures for this early tournament at Carson Park, allowing pitchers to play in short sleeves. With just 24 participants, all classes played at the same time on our 18 clay courts, beginning at noon.

RON CRAIGMILE had little trouble in Class A, winning all five games with a class high 63.6%. JAMES BILDERBACK: 3-2, 55.6% claimed 2nd place over LONNY TRANGSRUD's 3-2, 51.6%.

There was a scramble in Class B with GREG HEHLING, JOHN DOLEZEL & DEAN CHAFFEE finishing round robin play with 4-1 records. In play-off competition GREG defeated DEAN & then beat JOHN to claim 1st place, followed by JOHN & DEAN. Ringer percentages were GREG 28.8%; JOHN 42.6% & DEAN 28.0%.

A Regular Earlybird Participant TOM DUDENHOEFER won all five games in Class C to take 1st place with a 31.2% average. FRANK JOHNSON took 2nd at 4-1 with a class high average of 36.0% followed by BERNIE HUMAN, 3-2 & 21.2%.

In Class D, B.J. PAUL proved you don't have to throw the high average to take 1st place. She went 5-0, with an average of 18.8% followed by MARK ANDERSON 4-1 & 22.8%, & RICH BRYANT, 3-2 & 20.8%.

Despite the smaller turnout, everything went smoothly and it appeared that everyone had a great time.
