EAU CLAIRE OPEN Horseshoe Tournament - Sunday, June 7, 2009
Once again we played Russian Roulette with the weather...fitting the Sunday tournament between all-day rains on Saturday & Monday!
Dick Dvorak took advantage of Gert Wilcziek's absence to claim 1st place in Class A, winning all five games & pitching 57.2%. Edie McKinney took 2nd at 4-1, 43.6%, followed by Norm Gage 2-3, 50.4%.
In Class B, John Bauer also was undefeated at 5-0 with a 44.8% average. Wayne LeMar pitched above his average to take 2nd at 3-2, 49.2% with John (Cannon Fodder) Dolezel claiming 3rd at 3-2 & 40.4%.
Jim Heim who also threw over his average won 1st in Class C with a 4-1 record & 42.4% average. Dennis Kieser, making his come-back to horseshoes after not pitching for several years, took 2nd place at 3-2 & 36.4%, followed by Ralph Marthaler at 3-2 & 32.4%.
In the 8-person Class D, Del Karsjens took 1st place by beating Ron Wiese in the final game to finish at 6-1 & 27.5%. Ron came in 2nd at 5-2 & 29.6%. Bob Kallstrom took 3rd at 4-3 & 25.7% after winning his first four games.
Jim Ganther, throwing new shoes after having broken his old pair, claimed 1st place in Class E at 6-1 & 31.4%. (Guess he should have broken the old pair years ago.) Antone Matalas went 5-2 & 23.2% to take 2nd, with Ray Mallo coming in 3rd at 4-3 & 25.7%. (After pitching only two games, Larry Danielson had to drop out because of an aching shoulder.)
The Ganther family filled the six places in Class F: Steve Wallin was perfect at 5-0 & 28.8% to claim 1st place. Randy Ganther & Rod Ganther both finished at 3-2 & 6.4%, with Randy claiming 2nd place by virtue of his win over Rod. (Jay Ganther took 4th place.)
You really should plan to enter one of our Eau Claire tournaments to savor some of Jesse Comero's famous hot dogs or delicious barbeques. Jessie & his bride, LaVonne have run the lunch stand for many years & enjoy conversing with the pitchers who attend the tournaments. Both Jesse & LaVonne are former pitchers & he now claims he's 85 years old.
