EAU CLAIRE OPEN Horseshoe Tournament - Sunday, June 6, 2010
One thing you can almost always count on when Eau Claire hosts a tournament is that the weather will be "interesting". The morning classes had to cover the courts briefly once when a light shower passed through. The afternoon classes covered up twice when two heavier thunderstorms came through. With the Blue Angels in town for an air show, it was sometimes hard to tell if we were hearing thunder or jets passing overhead.
After being interrupted twice, Class A managed to complete all five of their games. Classes B & C decided to call it a day after having completed three of their five games before the second storm, thus qualifying as a completed tournament for their classes.
JIM BILDERBACK claimed 1st place in Class A with a late surge, pitching 70 & 72% in his last two games & finishing at 4-1 & 58.8% for the day. NORM GAGE at 3-2, 56% took 2nd place with MARK STEVENS, also 3-2 & 48% coming in 3rd.
In rain-shortened Class B, DAVE NINNEMANN walked away with 1st at 3-0, 50.6%. LES KARPIEL, 2-1, 46.6% edged out DEAN CHAFFEE 2-1, 44.6% for 2nd with Dean taking 3rd.
LONNY TRANGSRUD took 1st in the other "3-game" Class C, squeaking by 2nd place finisher JIM GANTHER. Both were 3-0. Lonny threw 40.6% compared to Jim's 38.7%. JIM HEIM at 2-1, 38.7% came in 3rd.
A last-minute scheduling change worked out well for DEL KARSJENS as he took 1st place in Class D. Del, 3-1/2 - 1-1/2 & 31.6% was moved from Class C to Class D the morning of the tournament. BOB KALLSTROM, also 3-1/2 - 1-1/2 pitched 29.2% to claim 2nd place. GEORGE ECKSTROM, following my advice to put the shoes around the stake, came in 3rd at 2-1/2 - 2-1/2, & 25.6%.
After a slow start, STAN FOX won his last three games & finished at 3-1/2 - 1-1/2, 25.2% to take 1st place in Class E. TOM DUDENHOEFER went 3-2, 20% for 2nd place, with RAY MALLO 3-2, 19.6% coming in 3rd.
In the only 7-person class, MARK ANDERSON missed a perfect day by a tie game in which both pitchers had 6 ringers. This was the second tie game of the day in which both pitchers had the same number of ringers. Mark took 1st place at 5-1/2 - 1/2, 16.3%. Second place went to FRANK JOHNSON, 5-1, 10.4%. Cadet ALEX TYZNIK, (Dennis Kieser's grandson) surprised his adult opponents by taking 3rd place at 3-3, 14.1%.
With our regular lunch stand operators, Jessie & LaVonne Comero, away (attending a graduation), our club secretary Debbi Smith & her mom did a super job keeping everyone fed. Thanks to both of them for helping us out. And thanks to Jane, Edie & Dave N. for keeping score for Class A for the last 2-1/2 games...& to Dennis for taking pictures. Thanks also to all participants for their patience with the many schedule changes and rain delays.
