EAU CLAIRE OPEN Horseshoe Tournament - Sunday, June 5, 2011
It was a perfect day to pitch horseshoes, although the afternoon classes were happy to complete their games as temperatures became VERY warm & there was no breeze. We had 45 participants (including 4 junior pitchers) with the adults throwing in 6 & 8 person classes.
The Juniors pitched a single round-robin with the following ringer percentages: ALEX TYZNIK 6%; BRADY REETZ 4.6%; KAITLYN TYZNIK & AUSTIN SHACKLETON 1.3%. All appeared to have a great time & enjoyed the attendance prizes they received.
Aside from Class "A" winner RON CRAIGMILE, who pitched 64.6% in winning all his games, this was a very competitive class. Eau Claire Club member LONNY TRANGSRUD continued his fast improvement with a 5.5 - 1.5 record & 55.4% to claim 2nd place. DAVE HUGHES, 62.1% claimed 3rd place while DICK DVORAK, 45% took 4th. Both had 4-3 records.
JIM GANTHER continues to have success since moving up to 30 feet, taking 1st in Class "B", with 6-1, 37.9%. JOHN BAUER was close behind at 5-2, 36.8% to take 2nd, followed by DEAN CHAFFEE, 4.5 - 2.5, 41.4% in 3rd place. LES KARPIEL made it into the cash awards at 4-3, 37.1% in 4th place.
Tournament Director LAURIE DOLEZEL took the place of a pitcher who could not attend, due to illness, & claimed 1st place in Class "C" at 4-1, 34.4% & edging out DEL KARSJENS, 4-1, 32% who took 2nd place. DEL was recognized for having competed in our Eau Claire Open for 20 years! RALPH MARTHALER with a class high 36% came in 3rd at 3-2.
Class "D" became a 7-person class with a late entry. LARRY DANIELSON was near perfect with an opening game tie followed by 6 consecutive wins to claim 1st place, averaging 24.2%. STEVE WALLIN was close behind in 2nd at 6-1, 27.1%, followed by DAVE PAUL in 3rd at 5.5-1.5 & 25%, & RAY MALLO in 4th at 4-3 & 15.8%.
TED ROHDE came up from LaCrosse for a clean sweep in Class "E", going 5-0 and 20.4% to take 1st place. RICH BROCKWAY edged out WAYNE SATONICA for 2nd place. Both had 3-2 records with RICH pitching 18.8% and WAYNE throwing 18%.
Eau Claire Club member KENNY RENTZ pitched well above his average in winning 1st place in Class "F" at 4-1 and 11.2%. These pitchers had 3-2 records: MARK GAGNON taking 2nd place at 12% followed by ROD GANTHER at 10.4%.
JESSIE & LAVONNE COMERO were kept busy serving lots of liquids in the hot temperatures...& of course Jessie's famous hot dogs & BBQs. Only Jessie & LaVonne know how many years they've been doing this! THANKS!!
It was good to see JANE SMITH'S contingent from Balsam Lake, and also our Gopher friends from Minnesota!
